Sony Receives Ecma Approval for UDM
June 30, 2005
SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) announced that the UMD (Universal Media Disc) has been approved as an industry standard for optical discs by Ecma International on June 21 2005. The next step for Sony will be to submit it to JTC 1, a technical committee jointly established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). It will go through a fast-track procedure, after which it is expected to be approved as a standard for these two organizations as well.

Ecma International is an industry association, which was founded in 1961 to support standardization of products in the ICT and consumer electronics sectors.

The UMD will be used in Sony's PSP, but the company also will market the product for use in a variety of portable video and audio offerings. The UMD has a diameter of 6cm and comes in two types, a single layer UMD with a storage capacity of 0.9Gb and a double layer type with 1.8Gb of storage capacity.
